… What. What costume could that possibly be? Am I a twitchy, reactionary Jew, or does Beck’s military dress make him look a snootchy bit like an SS Gruppenführer, circa 1939? Maybe it’s just the rope detailing on the hat. And I’m a twitchy reactionary. He wouldn’t knowingly dress like a Nazi. You’d have to give him that. He may be as anticommunist as a fascist might, but he’s just a stupid demagogue railing at nothing, not a real supporter of untrammeled executive power.
The British Grenadiers
If I was going to march into battle in a line formation, I would want this song to be playing.
Or Stockholm Syndrome by Muse. Whichever.
I’ve listened to this song about 30 times today, and I get excited every time the drums come in.
Every. Time.
The song was adapted by the Americans and used in battle during the Revolutionary War, under the title “Free Amerikay.” Also, during Operation Market Garden, a few men of the British 1st Airborne Division are said to have played this song using a flute and a few helmets and sticks as drums.
Hold up your hands, ye heroes
and swear with proud disdain
the wretch that would ensnare you
shall lay his hands in vain
should Europe empty all her force
we’ll leave her in array
and fight and shout and shout and fight
for North Amerikay!
Max is right. The drums are TREMENDOUS.
